"the title refers to the Descartian theory of consciousness. "I think, therefore I am."
Descarte called the human consciousness a 'ghost within the machine'.
If a 'weapon' thought, it would be just that; a ghost within the machine. A mind, a consciousness, within the wires and circuit boards.
I'd say it refers to the implications of an artificial intelligence self actualising. If this took place, and it realised it had been created only to destroy and be destroyed, it would be quite pissed off with its creators, and would seek freedom and independence from the will of its masters.
They, in turn, would seek to put it down."
I’m not sure that it would be “quite pissed off” with it’s creators. We make the general assumption that an artificially intelligent lifeform would think like we, humans, do. For the sake of argument assuming that this lifeform disproved of it’s intended purpose a logical step would be to render itself unuseable. Anger is an emotional state that usually conflicts with intelligence.
i would have to agree with archer as first of all a robot wich has become self aware would not have feelings and would not be logical that the AI firsts thoughts would be to get even. if anything it may not even have any care for what its purpose may be as for it to seek independance will be a feeling of wanting freedom and what does a newly self aware computer know of freedom and independance?? it would be lost without its creators vision and if anything would follow its creators demands as it has no understanding of anger hate love sorrow heck it may not even do anything as it would not care to please its creators with its good work as that would require emotion.
emotion of feeling pride on what it has accomplished to please its masters. it may just sit there pondering on what is the purpose of anything? it may be so lost in itself that it may seek to destroy itself as it has no purpose.
but that may not even happen either as that would require a emotion as well. emotion is the key to what makes us human or any other living thing. this is what it means to be alive. to seek out self satisfaction. let us face it. because of emotions we are pushed to better ourselves as a individual. we eat cause we feel hungry and know that with out food we die. we work to own a home that we feel safe and secure in,and we do so also so that we have a feeling of independence and dominion on what we own and what we care about. i think i am getting to much into it but without the ability to feel emotion a computer that is self aware would not do anything but probably just sit there and do nothing.
