I’d guess it’s the latter stages of a galactic merger. The tail looks like a spiral arm thrown far out from galactic center(s) as a large number pass by larger centers of gravity ala the slingshot effect.
Search for ‘galactic collision’ videos for a number of simulations to get an idea.
